SC DHfK Leipzig suffers clear home defeat

The handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig have remained winless in the Bundesliga for the eighth time in a row and are still in acute danger of relegation. The team coached by Frank Carstens was beaten 31:37 (12:21) at home by VfL Gummersbach and remains bottom of the table.

Blaer Hinriksson and Tomas Piroch were Saxony's best scorers in front of 4,492 spectators with five goals each. Playmaker Ludvig Hallbäck stood out for the fourth-placed Gummersbachers, who recorded their eleventh win in a row, with eight goals.

On equal terms only in the opening spell

The club from Leipzig was only able to keep up until 5:5 (7th minute). After that, the home side made an increasing number of hasty finishes and avoidable mistakes. Gummersbach, with national player Miro Schluroff in brilliant command, pulled away with an 8:1 run. After a timeout by Carstens, Leipzig developed more penetration in offense again, but still found no means in defense against VfL's quick passing.

After the break, the home side - with Matej Klima and Adam Lönn making their comeback after long injury layoffs - reared its head once more and fought back to 16:22 in the 35th minute. However, the visitors did not lose their composure and extended their lead to 31:22 by the 45th minute. The favorites clearly lost concentration in the final spell, allowing Leipzig to close the gap once more.
