Super series saved, but Bayern chase called off for now: Borussia Dortmund salvaged a 2:2 (0:2) in stoppage time in the top match at RB Leipzig. However, BVB are now eight points behind league leaders Munich. Nevertheless, Borussia extended their unbeaten run to 16 games: Only three teams (AC Milan, Fenerbahce Istanbul and Slavia Prague) are currently better across Europe. In front of 47,800 fans, Christoph Baumgartner emerged as Leipzig's hero in the first half. The Saxons' top scorer twice completed an almost identical move, scoring in the 20th and 39th minutes to give them a well-deserved half-time lead. Leipzig brought Dortmund back into the game, Romulo (50) scored an own goal. Fabio Silva equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time after a pass from Karim Adeyemi, meaning Dortmund remain something of an opponent for Leipzig, who have underperformed and scored below average so far this year. The draw was Saxony's sixth home game against BVB without defeat, following five wins. In addition, Niko Kovač remains without a win in the coaching duel with Ole Werner.
Despite the absences of Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can and Niklas Süle, the BVB defense should now have adjusted to Baumgartner's run. Or maybe not: In the 37th minute, the Austrian narrowly missed the target at the near post, and two minutes later he scored his tenth Bundesliga goal of the season after being played in by international David Raum.
Romulo gets Dortmund back into the game
After the changeover, BVB promptly got back into the game - with Leipzig's help. After a corner from Ryerson, Leipzig's Willi Orban involuntarily extended the ball and Romulo was unable to prevent his header. However, it was by no means the case that the goal served as the initial spark for BVB. Even though the visitors played with a little more commitment going forward, there were no big chances for a long time.
Instead, Ridle Baku (73') had the third RB goal on his feet. The international rounded Kobel and had only the empty BVB goal in front of him. But the angle was already too acute and Rami Bensebaini cleared easily.
When everything looked set for a Leipzig victory, Karim Adeyemi was sent flying again. The international was quicker than Castello Lukeba, crossed the ball flat - and Fabio Silva finished effortlessly at the second post.
