The keepers at Leipzig Zoo have been observing the growing pouch of a female koala for weeks. Now there is certainty about the offspring.

The koalas at the zoo have announced the arrival of new offspring. According to the zoo, the pouch of female Erlinga has been growing for weeks. Now an animal keeper has spotted a little snout for the first time - proof of a new little koala.

Senior curator Ariel Jacken said that the young animal is apparently developing well. It will still be a few weeks before it can be seen reliably. The cub is currently around four to five months old. It is the second birth at Leipzig Zoo since 2020.

Koala babies are the size of a coffee bean at birth and immediately move into their mother's pouch, the zoo explained. There, the miniature cub sucks on a teat and continues to develop under the protection of the pouch for another six months.
