Almost 2,000 events, more than 2 million guests: Chemnitz was European Capital of Culture for a whole year. Minister of State for Culture Weimer praises a creative spirit of optimism in the city.

The Chemnitz Capital of Culture year is estimated to have attracted more than 2 million visitors with almost 2,000 events. This was announced by the organizers in a summary. The art collections alone attracted a record number of visitors this year. By October, almost 230,000 visits had been counted there alone, compared to around 60,500 in the same period last year. The number of overnight stays in the city rose by 23.8 percent to almost 449,000 from January to September, it said.

"The people of Chemnitz and the Capital of Culture region have excelled themselves this year," stated Program Director Stefan Schmidtke. "They have made Chemnitz 2025 their project and they have succeeded magnificently."

In a statement, Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer (non-party) spoke of an outstanding variety of projects. "At the end of this special title year, we are experiencing a creative spirit of optimism in Chemnitz that extends far beyond Saxony and Germany - and will continue to have an impact far beyond 2025."
