Dancing, running, and an early night: At Dresden’s first Run and Rave, runners celebrate while they exercise. These kinds of party events have a special appeal.

Glow sticks, a giant box, and dancing joggers: Hundreds of runners celebrated together on Thursday at the first Run and Rave in Dresden. The classic party scene usually looks quite different—but for many participants, that’s exactly what makes it so appealing.

“You really combine this athletic, healthy aspect with something that’s usually associated with being unhealthy,” says runner Lena Stegert. And she feels more connected to the people at the same time; athletic performance isn’t the main focus. About 400 other joggers ran with her through Dresden’s Ostragehege—so many that the truck with the DJ booth had to stop, and runners took turns carrying a large speaker on their shoulders.

Is dancing the night away out of style?

It’s just something new, says organizer Leon Richter from the Social Sports Club Dresden. And: “Fewer and fewer people are interested in partying into the night.” It’s no longer cool to drink a lot of alcohol or party late into the night. “Nobody wants to stay up until 5:00 a.m. anymore,” says the 24-year-old. Young people are going out more mindfully and paying more attention to a healthy lifestyle. In his view, many still want to party—but in a different way.

That goes for Amelie, too. She does go out at night every now and then. “But more because it’s just the norm and not because that’s the kind of partying I’m looking for,” she says. In Australia, on the other hand, people go out around 6:00 p.m. and are home by 1:00 a.m. “I think that’s better,” she says.

After the Run and Rave, the runners were even able to hit the sack before midnight: there, the music stopped at 10:00 p.m. after the nearly four-kilometer run.

Alternative Party Formats

Sober morning raves, parties over coffee, or even while running: In recent years, more and more of these alternative party formats have emerged. Some are known as “soft clubbing” or “sober parties”—that is, parties without alcohol or drugs. Similar events have also taken place in Chemnitz and Leipzig.
