Studying Real Madrid in the Champions League has now become part of the job for SV Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner. “It’s kind of funny, but that’s just how it is. After all, we’re the next ones to face Leipzig,” Wagner said ahead of this Saturday’s Bundesliga away game at RB Leipzig (3:30 p.m./Sky). The Saxons lost 1–4 to the Royals on Wednesday evening. FC Bayern, Real Madrid, SV Elversberg: RB has to tackle this curious trio this week. “We can’t help the schedule. We’ve done just enough to deserve it,” said Wagner. “We won’t be underestimated. But we probably won’t be taken as seriously as Real Madrid either—and that’s perfectly fine.” Wagner spread his arms wide to illustrate the difference between “the great SVE” and “the massive Royal Madridista machine.” “No one takes us lightly,” said Wagner, who, by his own account, spent Wednesday’s Champions League evening relaxing with his family. The fact that Leipzig has won its home games in the Bundesliga so far by scores of 3–0, 5–0, and 6–0 doesn’t shock him. “We’ll try to do better than losing 6–0, even if that will be very, very difficult. An incredibly good team is waiting for us,” said Wagner. After the away game in Leipzig, two home matches await the promoted team: First in the DFB Cup on Tuesday (8:45 p.m.) against second-division side SV Darmstadt 98, then on Friday (8:30 p.m.) in the Bundesliga against FSV Mainz 05.
