RB Leipzig's sporting director Marcel Schäfer has suggested that ex-national striker Timo Werner should move in the winter in view of his reserve role. "He has always behaved professionally and correctly. Despite all this, I believe that if he wants more playing time and we have discussed this with him at length, it may be time for a change," said Schäfer after the 3-1 defeat to former champions Bayer Leverkusen on Sky TV.
However, this is solely the decision of Werner, who still has a well-paid contract until the end of the season. "If he decides to stay here, we will continue to work with him as normal. Just as we have done so far, because we respect contracts," added Schäfer.
Werner was moved into the Leipzig squad in the final game of the year due to the personnel absences and was even substituted in the final phase. The club's record goalscorer is still very popular with the fans and the 29-year-old was celebrated with shouts of "Timo Werner". According to media reports, the San José Earthquakes from the North American league MLS have signaled their interest in signing him.
