The Bundesliga handball players of Thüringer HC have celebrated the biggest international success in their club's history. The team of coach Herbert Müller deservedly won the European League final in Graz against the favorites Ikast Handbold from Denmark 34:32 (15:16) after a great performance. With 13 goals, the outstanding Johanna Reichert was once again the THC's best scorer. The Austrian was also voted best player of the Final Four at the end of the game.
Reichert takes responsibility
The Thuringians started the game confidently one day after their comfortable 35:29 semi-final win over JDA Bourgogne Dijon. However, the Bundesliga club already had major problems in defense with the Danish club's fast breaks, which allowed it to open up a 15:11 gap. However, the THC fought its way back into contention by the break, not least because goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle became ever stronger.
After the break, Reichert took on more and more responsibility for the Thuringians and put her team ahead for the first time in the second half (25:24 in the 43rd minute). The Danish club tried to respond, but found it increasingly difficult against THC, who defended passionately.
In the final phase, however, the Thuringians' nerves fluttered. Ikast reduced the deficit to 32:33 (59'), before Nathalie Hendrikse ended the trembling with a goal from an acute angle with 75 seconds remaining. After that, the jubilation knew no bounds.
