After winning two silver medals at the Olympics in Cortina, Francesco Friedrich has set his sights on new goals. The world's most successful bobsled pilot will continue his career through 2030.

Francesco Friedrich will continue his bobsledding career through the 2030 Winter Olympics. The 36-year-old from Pirna, who had to settle for two silver medals behind Johannes Lochner at the Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, is now aiming for his fifth Olympic appearance. The first major test for his newly formed team will be the World Championships in February 2027 in Lillehammer, Norway.

“Bobsledding is still my passion. Why should I give it up when I’m still good at it, when I still enjoy fine-tuning the details, training with the team all summer, preparing for the season, and then competing together at this level,” said Friedrich, who, with four gold and two silver medals, is the world’s most successful bobsled pilot.

Only his former pusher, Thorsten Margis, has one more gold medal—he won it in Lochner’s four-man bobsled. That one medal is still Friedrich’s goal. And the record-holding world champion wants to break the 100-World-Cup-victory barrier. He currently stands at 89 in the two-man and four-man bobsled.

The top team is also strong thanks to Lochner’s pusher, Fleischhauer

The prospects for success look good. His longtime rival Lochner has retired. Lochner’s top brakeman, Georg Fleischhauer, is now on Friedrich’s team after winning two gold medals in Cortina. Friedrich left open whether his former top brakeman, Simon Wulff, will return after his doping suspension ends. Starting July 7, Wulff could resume training with the team, and he could compete again starting September 7.

Pushman Alexander Schüller is no longer on the team; he has moved to Thuringian pilot Hans-Peter Hannighofer. Matthias Sommer and Felix Straub remain with Pirna-based Friedrich. In addition, Rupert Schenk is joining the record-holding world champion from Team Ammour.

A circle is set to close

The signs point to further success. After the 2027 World Championships in Lillehammer—where, back in 1994, Friedrich’s home coach Gerd Leopold helped Saxon Harald Czudaj win Olympic gold in the four-man event—the team will head to the World Championships in St. Moritz. There, the circle would practically come full circle after 15 years: In 2013, Friedrich’s star rose in the Swiss Engadin. Back then, he won his first World Championship title in the two-man bobsled with Jannis Bäcker—as the youngest world champion in bobsled history. Even then, Leopold spoke of a “once-in-a-century talent.”

The Winter Games on the French track in La Plagne suit him well. After all, the Germans often visited there for testing after the season. In France, the veteran is confident that, with a top crew, he can fend off the challenges from younger competitors. For Leopold, too, this would bring things full circle.
