RB Leipzig will lose its next veteran in the summer. Xaver Schlager will not extend his expiring contract and will leave the Saxons on a free transfer after four years. RB made the announcement after "several open and respectful talks". It is not known where the Austrian will be moving to. Most recently, there had been repeated rumors of interest from Juventus Turin.
Schlager came to Leipzig from VfL Wolfsburg in 2022. The Austrian international has played 97 Bundesliga games for the Saxons to date, scoring four goals and winning the DFB Cup and Super Cup in 2023.
"We have worked really hard over a long period of time and in several rounds to retain Xaver. Nevertheless, we naturally accept and respect his decision to look for a new direction, especially as the entire process was characterized by honest and open discussions," said RB Sport managing director Marcel Schäfer. Schlager, who is considered extremely injury-prone, emphasized that it was not a decision against RB, but for something new.
