Leipzig's Bundesliga handball team fails to make a statement in the relegation battle before the European Championship break. A weak second half leads to defeat against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

The Bundesliga handball team SC DHfK Leipzig ended the calendar year with its third consecutive defeat. The team of coach Frank Carstens lost 26:30 (16:15) to Rhein-Neckar Löwen in front of a season record crowd of 6,828 spectators. Matej Klima was the best scorer with nine goals for SC DHfK, which goes into the upcoming European Championship break bottom of the table with 5:33 points.

The club from Leipzig got off to a sluggish start and trailed 3:8 by the twelfth minute. However, they then found their pace more and more and also benefited from their outstanding goalkeeper Domenico Ebner, who made nine of his 14 saves in the first half. The home side turned a five-goal deficit into a narrow lead by the break.

At the start of the second half, Leipzig went ten minutes without scoring, which the Lions punished with a 4:0 run to make it 19:16. The hosts chased this deficit in vain until the end, also because the visitors' national goalkeeper David Späth was on top form.
