Timo Werner will not be leaving RB Leipzig for the USA in a flash transfer. According to the US media, there are negotiations with the San José Earthquakes from the MLS, but a departure is not imminent. "The moment things are announced, we will talk about it. Timo is with us, we enjoy working with him," said coach Ole Werner.
According to the coach, the striker has been fully integrated into training and is a candidate for the squad against SC Freiburg on Wednesday (20:30/DAZN). A transfer to the MLS could not yet be official anyway, as the transfer window does not open until the end of January. There was already contact between San José and the Werner party in December.
Top earner in San José?
The 29-year-old still has a contract with RB Leipzig until the summer, but plays a subordinate role in sporting terms. A move to the New York Red Bulls was on the cards last summer, but Werner decided to stay in Leipzig. So far, he has made three brief appearances and played just over ten minutes in the Bundesliga.
According to a report by "The Athletic", Werner could become one of the team's top earners at San José. A place as a so-called designated player is planned for the Swabian, meaning that his salary is freely negotiable. According to media reports, Werner earns a salary of around ten million euros a year in Leipzig.
Unsuccessful Earthquakes
Most teams will begin their MLS pre-season preparations in the next two weeks. Werner could therefore play the entire MLS season if he leaves Leipzig and would not come during the current season like Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps) or Marco Reus (Los Angeles Galaxy) the year before. In sporting terms, the Earthquakes are not a figurehead of the MLS, having missed out on the play-offs in recent seasons.
