Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff has reacted with harsh criticism to RB Leipzig's 6-0 defeat at FC Bayern Munich at the start of the season. The team's performance under new coach Ole Werner was "despondent" and "disastrous". "That was shocking for all of us," said Mintzlaff at the "Sport Bild" award in Hamburg. "Of course we have to come to terms with it. It was the first matchday, not the last, but there was a lot to talk about."
Last Friday evening, the Saxons trailed 3-0 at half-time in the opening game of the new Bundesliga season at the German soccer record champions. In the end, they suffered their heaviest defeat in the Bundesliga.
On Saturday (3.30 pm/Sky) against 1. FC Heidenheim, Mintzlaff expects a clear reaction from the team. "I certainly don't expect a worse performance than the one we put on in Munich. But of course we need a reaction now and not just on the second matchday, but in general," said the 50-year-old. The defeat against Bayern was a tough setback. Now we have to "draw the right conclusions and of course put in a different performance".
Is Simons staying or leaving?
Mintzlaff left it open as to whether Xavi Simons, who is keen to leave, will stay with the Saxons. The 22-year-old Dutch international is on Chelsea FC's radar and wants to move there. The attacking player is an outstanding player. It is also no secret that he wants to take the next step.
"There are certainly talks and interested parties, of course," said Mintzlaff, adding: "But it has to be right for all sides. And if that happens, then there could still be a departure. And if it doesn't happen, then Xavi Simon will be RB Leipzig's player this season." The Bundesliga transfer window closes at 8 p.m. on September 1.
