The rumors persist, and now there seems to be some movement on the issue. RB Leipzig apparently wants to part ways with coach Ole Werner. A former Bayern player could be his successor.

Despite achieving all of his season goals with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, coach Ole Werner appears to be on his way out after just one year. According to media reports, 45-year-old Argentine Martin Demichelis is set to take over the team—which finished third in the last championship—for the upcoming season.

According to the newspaper "Marca," the move to Leipzig was apparently finalized in the past few hours. As Radio Marca Baleares reports, Demichelis has reached an agreement with RB that now only requires official confirmation from both clubs. According to Sky, Demichelis is the top candidate at RB, but nothing is set in stone yet. Argentina’s BolaVip reported that RB is prepared to pay a three-million-euro transfer fee.

The former player and youth coach for FC Bayern Munich had been coaching RCD Mallorca, which was relegated from the Spanish first division, since February under a contract initially set to run until the end of the season. He had recently extended this contract through 2028, though apparently with an exit clause.

Dissatisfaction with Werner in the executive suite

Dissatisfaction with Werner, who still has a contract in Leipzig until June 30, 2027, is said to have been felt primarily by Supervisory Board Chairman Oliver Mintzlaff and the global soccer department led by Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez. The new playing philosophy implemented by Werner did not fully convince them. Additionally, it is reported that the team needed too much luck to qualify for the Champions League.

Schäfer backtracked

Werner led Leipzig to third place with a team featuring new players in key offensive positions. With 65 points, they missed their own Bundesliga record by just two points. In the summer, Leipzig had lost key players in Xavi Simons, Loïs Openda, and Benjamin Sesko.

Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schäfer was still willing to extend Werner’s contract promptly following the successful Champions League qualification. But as early as the beginning of June, the 41-year-old publicly backtracked a bit, citing a pending season review.

Werner not the first choice

That review is now apparently complete—with a likely unexpected outcome for Werner. Leipzig had paid Werder Bremen around two million euros for the 38-year-old as recently as the summer of 2025. Although the coach signed only a two-year contract at the time, the intention was certainly a long-term partnership.

However, Werner was not the first choice in Leipzig. Cesc Fàbregas was actually supposed to be signed, but the Spaniard stayed with his club Como 1907 and led them to the Champions League last season.
