RB Leipzig continue their winning streak and set a new Bundesliga start record with coach Ole Werner. With the 3:1 (1:0) in the Bundesliga top match against rivals VfB Stuttgart, the Saxons recorded their seventh win in their eighth game without defeat and thus remain Bayern's number one rivals.
Jeff Chabot (45th minute) put RB ahead with an own goal in front of 47,800 spectators in the sold-out Red Bull Arena, before Yan Diomande (53rd minute) increased the lead. Substitute Tiago Tomas (65') managed to pull a goal back for VfB before Romulo (90.+1) marked the final score.
Starting record for coach Werner
The success against the Swabians also meant a club record for coach Werner. After the 6-0 defeat in Munich to open the season, seven wins and one draw followed in the subsequent Bundesliga matches - a total of 22 points. RB's best start to a season to date was in the 2016/17 premiere season under Ralph Hasenhüttl, when they had 21 points after nine games.
After three Bundesliga defeats in a row against the Swabians, who had also knocked Leipzig out of the DFB Cup in the semi-finals in the previous season, Werner brought back the team that won 6-0 in Augsburg, despite the slight cup rotation. Sebastian Hoeneß made three changes to his team after the cup match, starting with goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, Hosha Vagnoman and Chris Führich.
RB started strongly, with Ridle Baku (2nd) on the half-right and David Raum (3rd) on the half-left. But Nübel prevented Raum from going behind with a foot save. Stuttgart then played a lively game and had more space in midfield. However, Führich's shot from distance (8') and Deniz Undav's header (10') were all they could muster at first. It was only when Maximilian Mittelstädt shot (18) that RB keeper Peter Gulacsi had to summon all his skill.
Own goal gives RB the lead
RB shifted up a gear shortly before the break. The strong Nübel saved twice against Antonio Nusa (24th/32nd) and was then lucky when Romulo (33rd) narrowly missed after a superb backpass from Baku. The same happened in the 41st minute when the Brazilian missed. The agile Diomande then literally forced the overdue lead when he once again forced his way through on the right and played the ball to former RB youth player Jeff Chabot, who could only deflect the ball into his own goal when trying to clear (45').
In the second half, Diomande once again justified his starting eleven preference over Bakayoko. He danced past Mittelstädt and shot into the near corner to make it 2-0 (53'). VfB then went on the attack and were rewarded with the equalizer. After the RB defense had fallen asleep, Tomas (65) was free, curved around Gulacsi and slotted home to make it 2-1 seven minutes after coming on.
Suddenly it was an open exchange of blows again. Romulo (81') could have made it 3:1 with a header from close range, but Nübel made another save. In stoppage time, Romulo (90.+1) reacted with lightning speed to a mistake by the otherwise strong Nübel and slotted home to make it 3-1.
