The Leipzig handball team cannot confirm its upward trend in the Bundesliga. They have no chance against HSV Hamburg - not least because a key player drops out early.

The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team missed out on a third successive win in the Bundesliga. The team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson lost 25:29 (11:15) against HSV Hamburg in front of a home crowd. Andri Runarsson was the best scorer in front of 4,681 spectators with six goals for the club from Saxony, who remain in twelfth place with 21:39 points.

Leipzig got off to a sluggish start to the game and quickly trailed 3:7 (11th minute), forcing Sigtryggsson to call his first timeout early on. The home side then stabilized in defense, but its attacking play remained very static. SC DHfK also suffered from the absence of national player Luca Witzke, who was injured in the 15th minute after landing a jump shot. In addition, the former Leipzig player Mohamed El-Tayar put in a strong performance in Hamburg's goal, making eight saves in the first half.

The visitors were also more effective after the break and pulled 19:13 ahead in the 37th minute. Although Leipzig showed its fighting spirit and worked its way back to within three goals several times in the final spell, it was no longer able to seriously threaten Hamburg's deserved victory. The only good news from Leipzig's perspective that evening was the early extension of Staffan Peter's contract. The 21-year-old right winger signed until 2028.
