RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi is reportedly on Villarreal’s radar. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and the newspaper “Bild,” negotiations between the top Spanish club and the Hungarian goalkeeper are reportedly already well underway. However, according to dpa reports, there has not yet been an official inquiry from the Spanish club to the Bundesliga club from Saxony.
The 36-year-old Gulacsi had only extended his contract in Leipzig in February through the summer of 2027. However, it is expected that the longtime starting goalkeeper will now make way for the younger Belgian Maarten Vandevoordt (24).
Gulacsi has been with RB since the club’s second-division days. After transferring from RB Salzburg to the Saxons in the summer of 2015, he has made 362 appearances. A departure after eleven years would also be a problem for Leipzig at this point, as Gulacsi has consistently emphasized that he is only there to support Vandevoordt as the number one. Finding a top-tier goalkeeper as a successor who is willing to accept the role of number two is difficult. In addition to Vandevoordt and Gulacsi, RB also has 32-year-old Leopold Zingerle under contract, who is likewise considered a team player.
