Peter Gulacsi draws a line in the sand in Hungary. The Bundesliga goalkeeper's career is not over yet. Whether at RB Leipzig or elsewhere is questionable.

RB Leipzig's Peter Gulacsi retires as Hungary international goalkeeper. "A wonderful chapter has come to an end, an unforgettable journey has come to an end. I bid farewell to the Hungarian national team with gratitude and pride in my heart. More than a decade, 58 games, so many memories, battles and joy," Leipzig's number 1 shared on Instagram.

The 35-year-old Gulacsi spoke of his biggest "childhood dream. Every single moment will remain an eternal memory for me. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, my family and you, the fans - your support means more than anything. Keep it up, Hungary!" He made no statement about his future. His club in Leipzig also declined to comment.

What does this mean for his future?

Despite his worst season to date, the Hungarian was one of the absolute top performers, scoring 14 times, which no other Bundesliga goalkeeper managed. Even after his violent collision with David Zec of Holstein Kiel, when he suffered a concussion and an injury to his right ear, he came back strongly after completing the German Football League (DFL) protocol for head injuries.

However, Gulacsi is not an egoist, but rather a team player. Weeks ago, for example, he advocated that the young Belgian Maarten Vandevoordt should also get his playing time at RB. "I could fight frantically for every minute of the game and say that I want this and that. But that wouldn't be the right attitude for the overall structure, and I'm not that kind of guy either."

End of career not yet in sight

So it's a top constellation for RB and Vandevoordt, who the club says clearly has a future. Especially as Gulacsi and his family feel very much at home in Leipzig. He still has a contract until the summer of 2026 and "doesn't want to end his career next year. For me, it's about continuing to play soccer beyond 2026". His experience and performances are at a top level. Whether he wants to go abroad again after his spells in Budapest, Liverpool, Salzburg and Leipzig is more than questionable.
