Interim coach Petrik Sander has secured 1. FC Magdeburg's first home win of the season. Maximilian Breunig (75./foul penalty) and Rayan Ghrieb (90.+2) scored the goals in the 2:0 win against Preußen Münster. Magdeburg remain bottom of the table, but are now level on points with Dynamo Dresden and VfL Bochum and two points behind a non-relegation place.
"It's not about whether I'm doing anything differently, but: We had a clear plan of how we wanted to approach this and we stuck to it," said Sander after the game. Goalscorer Breunig explained about the penalty kick: "We don't have a penalty taker who is determined. I had a good feeling all day and when the whistle blew, I knew that I would take the ball."
The 64-year-old Sander, who will also be in charge of FCM on the touchline with Pascal Ibold for the DFB Cup match this Wednesday (18:00/Sky) at Bavarian regional league club FV Illertissen, refrained from making any changes after the 0-0 draw in Darmstadt. Magdeburg struggled to control the game and scored early on, but Atik's goal (7th) was disallowed for offside after VAR intervention.
Münster in control in a game with few chances
The visitors had more of the ball, but the game largely took place between the penalty areas. Münster's Malik Batmaz (25') was denied by the goalkeeper on a rare chance, as was Alexander Ahl-Holmström (35') at the other end. FCM slowly became more active after the break, but always had to watch out for counter-attacks from the visitors.
Magdeburg lacked a clear line in attack, but both sides continued to create scoring opportunities but were ultimately too imprecise. A penalty finally helped FCM end their goal drought: Breunig scored after 524 minutes. Magdeburg were now definitely the better team and increased their lead in stoppage time through Ghrieb.
Interim duo continue to gather arguments
Three days before the cup tie in Bavaria, FCM secured their second league win and regained their confidence. With four points, the interim duo of Sander/Ibold have already picked up one more than the hapless Markus Fiedler. It is possible that the interim duo will become a permanent solution after all.
