Dynamo Dresden shows a different side at home—playing efficiently and keeping a clean sheet. Now Coach Stamm is calling for a different performance on the road as well.

Dynamo Dresden, currently at the bottom of the league, has managed to climb out of the relegation zone. But what does the 3-0 victory over SpVgg Greuther Fürth mean? Just as they did when they advanced in the DFB Cup with a 2-0 win over FC Schalke 04, the team from Dresden put in an absolutely efficient performance against the Franconians. “These are the games that really matter. Friday night, a floodlit match, at home—that’s what makes it really exciting. We showed a really good response today,” said goal-scorer Ben Bobzien.

Afterward, striker Vincent Vermeij stood in the mixed zone looking like he’d just come out of a boxing match. “I think he hit me right in the face with his shoe,” said the Dutchman, his nose badly swollen, adding: “In my opinion, the first half in Hannover was even better, but now we’ve managed to carry the game through the full 90 minutes. That’s what matters most.” With a bleeding nose, he scored the 3-0 goal (55th minute), after Robert Wagner (31st) and Ben Bobzien (41st) had previously found the net in front of 30,786 spectators at Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion.

Coach Stamm “Satisfied with the Way We Played”

“I’m very satisfied with the way we played it out,” said Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm, emphasizing: “It’s always nicer at home. When we have this home-field advantage and this support, we’re naturally happy. At the end of the day, though, we still need to be successful in our away games going forward.” The next opportunity for Dresden, which remains winless on the road, comes in two weeks after the international break at Betzenberg against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. So far, they’ve only managed two draws on the road.

Earning three points only at home isn’t enough in the long run. And after a strong first half in the 1-2 loss in Hanover, Stamm had hit a nerve ahead of the Fürth game. “In the end, it’s about getting the job done. We’re often only good for 60 or 70 minutes. It’s about consistency and having the discipline to see it through for 90 minutes,” said Stamm. His team executed this efficiently and consistently against the Franconians.

Above all, luck was on Dynamo’s side this time, as the first two goals were both deflected unstoppably by Hendry Blank. “A few weeks ago, people were saying we needed to shoot more. We took that to heart. I think the league is so evenly matched that you need moments like that,” said Stamm, emphasizing: “Still, sometimes you just need a bit of luck.”
