Ole Werner has announced a ruthless review of the 6-0 debacle at FC Bayern Munich after his completely unsuccessful Bundesliga debut as coach of RB Leipzig. "That was a disastrous performance. We surrendered in the course of the game - that can't happen to us. The only thing that will help is to address these things head-on and come to terms with them," said the visibly disappointed soccer coach about the Saxons' highest Bundesliga defeat.
The RB coach, who joined from Werder Bremen in the summer, was brutally reminded right at the start of the season "that we still have a mountain of work ahead of us. That will take some time." Despite the upheaval in the squad, the team must not present itself as it did in Munich. "What must not happen is that we fall apart after setbacks. We have to build up a different energy," criticized Werner and demanded: "We have to manage to have a different dynamic as a group."
David Raum also spoke plainly. "Everyone has to ask themselves whether this is what we want to play this season. It's also a question of mentality," said the defender and demanded: "Something like this must never happen to us again."
What will become of Xavi?
The fact is: In this condition, it will be difficult for Leipzig to attack at the top again after finishing a disappointing seventh in the previous season and missing out on international competition. "Six is a very, very bitter pill to swallow. You have to put that to one side first," admitted sporting director Marcel Schäfer.
There is also the unrest surrounding Xavi Simons, who wants to move to Chelsea FC in England. "Everyone knows about his ambitions, he has also expressed his desire to move to us," said Schäfer. There have been one or two exchanges in recent weeks, but no agreement has yet been reached. "We're not blocking any player, but the parameters have to be right," said Schäfer.
