The Niners Chemnitz basketball team won a thrilling Central German duel on Boxing Day. The club from Saxony won the derby against the hosts MBC Syntainics in Leipzig's Quarterback Immobilien Arena by 94:90 (50:46).
While the visitors got back within touching distance of the playoff places, Weißenfels, which had previously been in fourth place, lost touch with the top of the table after its second defeat in a row. Amadou Sow (21), Kevin Yebo (20), Corey Davies (18) and Ty Brewer (12) played the biggest part in the Niners' sixth win of the season. Even the strong performance of Charles Callison (30) was not enough for the MBC to win. Khyri Thomas (24), Jure Planinic (15) and Spender Reaves (10) also scored in double figures.
Constantly changing leads
Chemnitz got off to the better start and led 10:6 after five minutes. However, the MBC struck back in the first quarter, turning a 12:15 (8th minute) lead into a 21:15 advantage with a 9:0 run in just over a minute and extending it to 41:31 (16th minute). However, the Niners were four points in front at the break.
An open exchange of blows then ensued. Callison put Weißenfels back in front by 56:53 (24') after the break with ten points in succession. The lead changed hands six times in the final quarter alone. In the end, Weißenfels' long-range shooters, who were very successful before the break, shot too poorly from beyond the arc: only eleven out of 32 attempts landed in the basket. By contrast, ten out of 27 shots from distance found their target for the Saxons.
