Bundesliga handball club SC DHfK Leipzig is attempting a completely new sporting start after the unsuccessful start to the season. The team at the bottom of the table parted ways with coach Raul Alonso and sports director Bastian Roscheck.
The new head coach is Frank Carstens. The former assistant coach of the German national team comes from the Los Angeles Handball Club. The 54-year-old from Lower Saxony, who coached SC Magdeburg from 2010 to 2013, led the first training session on Wednesday afternoon.
"Relegation in acute danger"
"Up until the game in Minden, we firmly believed that we would get back on track for success in this constellation, but had to painfully realize that the desired development was not happening and that relegation was in acute danger," said managing director Karsten Günther.
The Saxons recently suffered a clear 26:32 defeat in Westphalia, which forced Günther to rethink. "That's why we decided to make an immediate change in sporting leadership and will do everything we can to keep Leipzig in the "strongest league in the world"."
Only two points in twelve games
Alonso only moved to Leipzig last summer. One draw each at Frischauf Göppingen and promoted Bergischer HC were the only results in twelve games with some desolate performances. Although the 46-year-old Spaniard had initially been given the go-ahead, he has now been given a quick exit ahead of the upcoming away game at VfL Gummersbach on Saturday (7 p.m./Dyn).
