Thanks to a strong first half and a late goal, Eintracht Braunschweig have gained some breathing space in the relegation battle in Bundesliga 2. The club from Lower Saxony won 3:2 (2:0) at fellow rivals Dynamo Dresden. Former Dresden player Christian Conteh (7') gave the visitors an early lead in front of 31,150 spectators and made it 2-0 after 21 minutes. Jakob Lemmer (54) and Nils Fröling (56) struck twice to tie and equalize. Braunschweig's Patrick Nkoa (78) restored Eintracht's lead, which also meant victory.
The hosts, for whom Stefan Kutschke had to replace Vincent Vermeij at short notice, initially failed to get into the game. Not much went forward. Instead, they made hair-raising mistakes in their own half. A whole string of them led to the opening goal. In addition, the ball was repeatedly lost due to mistakes. An organizing hand in midfield was missing.
Eintracht lead Dynamo at times
Braunschweig took advantage of this, gained increasing confidence, had the air superiority and were more aggressive in tackles. Johan Gomez (13) missed a great opportunity to make it 2-0 when the Dynamo defense failed to get the ball out of their own penalty area. Conteh did better a little later. The goal was preceded by a sleepy interlude in the home side's build-up play. If Dresden goalkeeper Tim Schreiber had not reacted strongly three times at the end of the first half, his team could have been significantly further behind.
A different Dresden face after the break
In the second half, Dynamo suddenly played with pressure and brains. That impressed Braunschweig, who now made mistakes of their own. Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was unable to keep out a Lemmer shot before the 1:2, and the equalizer was preceded by mistakes in positional play.
As Dynamo pressed for the winning goal, Nkoa scooped the ball over the Dresden goal line from a scramble. Dynamo now had to come back, opening up space for Eintracht's counter-attacks. Dynamo's Jonas Oehmichen missed a great chance to equalize in stoppage time.
