Eintracht Braunschweig won their opening match in the 2nd Bundesliga at 1. FC Magdeburg despite being outnumbered. The team from Lower Saxony prevailed 1:0 (0:0) in front of 28,780 spectators. Mehmet Aydin scored the spectacular winning goal (82nd minute). His teammate Kevin Ehlers had previously been shown the red card (54')
Both coaches were making their second league debuts: Markus Fiedler for FCM and Heiner Backhaus for Eintracht. The teams played at a high tempo, with Braunschweig lying in wait for Magdeburg to make mistakes.
High tempo, few chances
Despite the high tempo, there were hardly any chances to score, with Magdeburg's Martijn Kaars hitting the post with the best shot (27'). Magdeburg now became stronger, but failed to score. As the visitors also rarely found gaps in the FCM defense, the teams went into the break goalless.
The teams returned unchanged and Braunschweig had the first opportunity, but Dominik Reimann saved Aydin's shot (49'). In the midst of Braunschweig's pressure phase, Ehlers saw red after a foul on Marcus Mathisen. Magdeburg then became even more dominant, but lacked ideas and precision. Instead, Aydin scored with a brilliant finish from distance after winning the ball on the halfway line.
