RB Leipzig buys Abdoul Koné, but lets the talented defender play in France for another six months. In the medium term, the 20-year-old is set to replace a leading player.

RB Leipzig is strengthening its squad with Abdoul Koné. The central defender joins from French second division club Stade Reims and, according to media reports, will cost around 17 million euros. The Bundesliga club announced that Koné has signed a contract until 2031 and will remain on loan at Reims until the summer.

"We are delighted that we have already signed Abdoul despite strong competition and have thus secured a great talent in the central defender position. Abdoul is a tall and physical defender who is strong in tackles and headers and has an extremely high top speed," said RB sporting director Marcel Schäfer.

The 20-year-old is right-footed and is therefore likely to be brought in to compete with long-serving captain Willi Orban. The 33-year-old Hungarian international's contract expires in the summer of 2027. An extension of his contract is not considered certain.
