Bennet Wiegert expects a different performance from the Foxes

Bennet Wiegert loves the excitement. That’s why the coach of German champion SC Magdeburg now expects the Cup winner to put up a different fight following its decisive Super Cup victory over Füchse Berlin. “The Super Cup was one thing; the Bundesliga is another. That’s over, done, and dusted. And now the Bundesliga is coming up; I don’t think the Super Cup win will play much of a role for either team,” said the champion coach ahead of this Thursday’s top-of-the-table clash (8:15 p.m./Dyn and MDR). 

Wiegert: “I Never Get Tired of Berlin vs. Magdeburg”

The Bundesliga showdown against the capital city club has become increasingly intense in recent years. “I never get tired of Berlin vs. Magdeburg; I like what’s developed over the past few years. The rivalry has grown because both teams have simply performed well, and both clubs have done a great job,” said Wiegert, adding: “So that’s exactly what I want. A real rivalry with, hopefully, plenty of excitement.”

Following the commanding victory in the Super Cup in Munich (38–31)—which World Handball Player of the Year and Füchse star Mathias Gidsel described as a “reality check for everyone”—the Dane believes the Füchse are on the right track. Following the departures—including World and European Champion Lasse Andersson—the new signings, such as Swedish goalkeeper Andreas Palicka, immediately made their mark in the hard-fought 33:31 season-opening victory in the Bundesliga against MT Melsungen.
