Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. The aim of screening is to detect the first signs as early as possible. Not all women take up the offer.

Two out of five women in Saxony let their invitation to mammography screening lapse unused. Last year, a total of 163,284 women in the Free State took part in a screening, as the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony announced on request.

Saxony among the top 5 in Germany

This corresponds to a participation rate of 57.4 percent. After a decline in recent years, the pre-corona level of 2019 has thus been reached again. In a nationwide comparison, Saxony is among the top 5 with the highest participation rate.

Women who did not attend the invitations include women who have breast cancer or who are already undergoing annual curative mammography due to the presence of a family history, explained Katharina Bachmann-Bux, spokesperson for KV Saxony. Other reasons for non-participation, such as a lack of information and education, can only be speculated on.

Who is invited and why

All women between the ages of 50 and 75 are invited to mammography screening every other year. The letter is accompanied by a comprehensive and verified brochure with information. According to KV Sachsen, the gynecologists treating the women are an important component of the information provided.

During the examination, your breasts are x-rayed in order to detect changes as early as possible. The aim is to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths. In addition, the women affected should be given the gentlest possible treatment. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women. According to the latest data from the Center for Cancer Registry Data at the Robert Koch Institute, there were 74,500 new cases in women nationwide in 2022.
