The number of hospital patients in Saxony fell by a good eighth compared to the last pre-corona year 2019. Saxony's hospitals treated around 889,000 people as inpatients last year, according to the State Statistical Office. This was around 117,000 fewer patients than in 2019, although there was a slight increase of 1.6 percent compared to 2023.
Beds 71 percent occupied
On average, patients stayed in hospital for a good seven days. The length of stay in geriatrics was significantly longer at
14 days and in psychiatric departments at 24 to 44 days. The approximately 24,200 beds were 71.2 percent occupied on average in 2024 - a decrease of almost six percentage points since 2019.
Around 10,500 doctors (+3.4 percent) and 26,700 nurses (+4.8 percent) worked at the 76 hospitals in Saxony. The majority of beds were in the hands of public providers (62.5 percent), followed by private (26 percent) or non-profit hospitals (11.7 percent).
