Organ donation remains a rare commodity: although the number of transplants has increased, the waiting list is still long.

In Saxony, around 400 people are waiting for an organ donation. On August 31, there were exactly 383 patients on the waiting list for an organ, according to statistics from Eurotransplant. According to the statistics, 269 people were waiting for a kidney, 60 for a liver, 36 for a heart, 18 for a pancreas and 13 for a lung. According to the statistics, 8,100 people were waiting for an organ nationwide.

Slightly more organs transplanted

The number of transplants performed from January to August 2025 was many times lower. Across Germany, 2,188 organs were transplanted - 150 more than in the same period in 2024, according to figures from the German Organ Transplant Foundation. In Saxony, the figure was 113 (2024: 106). Living donations are not included.

The number of organ donors in Saxony remained constant: according to the foundation, the number of 49 at the end of August was at the same level as the previous year. Accordingly, 141 organs were removed from them and later transplanted nationwide and abroad. That was just under 20 more than in the same period in 2024 (122).

At 2,025, the number of organs donated nationwide in 2025 was also higher than in the previous two periods (2023: 1,967, 2024: 1,909). By August, there had been 673 organ donors.

Initiative for opt-out solution

Until now, the removal of organs after death has been subject to explicit consent. Several federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia, want to change this regulation and are campaigning for organ donation to become the norm if you do not object during your lifetime.

Last year, the Bundesrat had already voted in favor of such an objection solution and submitted it to the Bundestag. However, the early federal elections intervened. Now the state chamber has to vote again.
