The mills of bureaucracy often grind slowly. The State Directorate of Saxony is endeavoring to speed things up and accelerate investments by large companies.

The State Directorate of Saxony (LDS) wants to speed up approval procedures. "Professional, fast approval procedures are a decisive locational advantage for business settlements," said LDS President Béla Bélafi in Dresden. In addition to financial support, bureaucracy plays a key role in attracting large companies. "Swift procedures ensure rapid implementation. This in turn enables rapid growth for the company and the state."

Globalfoundries expands chemical warehouse in Dresden

The background to this is a permit for the semiconductor manufacturer Globalfoundries to expand its chemical warehouse at the Dresden site. The review and approval took just four months, it was reported. Comparable procedures in Germany would normally take around nine to twelve months. The expansion of the warehouse was necessary to prevent supply bottlenecks worldwide and to secure the increasing demand capacities.

"From GlobalFoundries' point of view, efficiency and speed in approval procedures are also a decisive competitive advantage and create the basis for sustainable growth as a company and as a region," emphasized Manfred Horstmann, CEO of Globalfoundries Dresden.

The change to the chemical storage facility is an important step in the planned expansion of GF's chip production capacities in Dresden. The "SPRINT" project, which was recently presented to the public in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), will see around 1.1 billion euros invested and the site's total capacity increased to around 1.1 million wafers per year by the end of 2028.
