Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Panter, is counting on close cooperation with Taiwan and Vietnam to strengthen the region as a technology hub and open up new markets for businesses.

Saxony wants to learn from Taiwan's semiconductor industry and expand its cooperation with the Asian country. Taiwan is the undisputed number one in microelectronics and semiconductors, emphasized Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter (SPD) during a visit to the capital, Taipei. Saxony is the world’s fifth-largest semiconductor hub, but still has a lot to learn: “We want to grow; we want to improve. That’s why we have to be in Taiwan.”

Chipmaker TSMC is building a production facility in Dresden with partners

This is the SPD politician’s third visit to Taiwan within a year. Saxony’s ties to the country are very deep. For example, there is a great deal of exchange between universities in the field of science. The same applies to the business sector. Panter pointed to the commitment of the semiconductor company TSMC, which is building a large chip factory in Dresden together with partners. The project is on schedule, Panter said. The plant is scheduled to open in 2027.

Saxony aims to become a kind of “Taiwan Hub”

“We want people from Taiwan to feel at home in Saxony and to be good hosts,” the minister emphasized. The Free State aims to become a kind of “Taiwan Hub.”

Panter sees Vietnam as a strategic growth market for Saxony

Panter will be visiting Taiwan and Vietnam through September 8. In Taiwan, his schedule includes, among other things, appointments at the Semicon Asia semiconductor trade show. In Vietnam, discussions will focus on topics such as environmental and energy technology, water management, infrastructure, and skilled workers. “Vietnam is a strategically important growth market for Saxon companies. The country’s economic dynamism opens up opportunities for cooperation, technology transfer, new sales markets, and the establishment of new production sites,” the minister explained.
