In future, the Saxon police are to be better prepared to deal with anti-Semitism. To this end, the Saxon Ministry of the Interior and the Saxon Association of Jewish Communities have concluded a cooperation agreement, as announced by the ministry. The aim is to counter anti-Semitic attitudes and crimes more effectively and to strengthen Jewish life in the Free State.
The core of the agreement is an educational offer for the police in Saxony. In the coming months, a total of ten full-day workshops are to be held at the Saxon Police University of Applied Sciences (FH) for prospective police commissioners and police master trainees. The aim is to impart knowledge about manifestations and ideologies of anti-Semitism and to strengthen the police's ability to act sensitively when dealing with those affected.
Threat situation changes everyday police work
"Protecting Jewish life is an important task for the Saxon police," said State Police President Jörg Kubiessa. The cooperation creates new opportunities for training and further education and strengthens mutual trust.
The chairwoman of the Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities, Ekaterina Kulakova, referred to the changed security situation. "If someone had told me ten years ago that the police would have to provide such massive protection for Christmas markets and other large celebrations, for example, I wouldn't have believed it. Today it's a reality." Jewish institutions are particularly at risk.
Trust is key
The new agreement builds on the "Klug gegen Antisemitismus" (Smart against anti-Semitism) project, which was implemented between 2022 and 2024. The aim is also to further strengthen the trust of Jewish citizens in state institutions, especially the police.
