In the summer, the Oberwiesenthal town council decided to sell the ski resort on the Fichtelberg to a private investor. But then the process stalled. Now the mayor is speaking out.

The sale of Saxony's largest alpine ski resort to an investor has been completed. The municipal subsidiary Fichtelberg Schwebebahn Kurort Oberwiesenthal is no longer owned by the town, but is now part of the private lift company Oberwiesenthal, Mayor Jens Benedickt announced on Facebook.

"With yesterday's receipt of the agreed purchase price, a long journey, characterized by intensive negotiations and many discussions, has come to a successful conclusion - a journey that we embarked on together in November 2024," Benedickt continued. As things currently stand, however, the company will continue to exist and will continue to offer its existing services in the medium term.

The sale was originally supposed to have been completed in mid-August. But then the process stalled. In June, the Oberwiesenthal town council approved the sale of the ski resort, including the historic suspension lift, to the private lift company.

Millions in investment planned

The price was set at 10.4 million euros by an external expert. The ski resort on the Fichtelberg attracts many winter sports fans every year and is an important factor for tourism. However, the facilities are now considered outdated and the area urgently needs to be modernized.

This will require millions in investment, which the new operator intends to make - such as the construction of a new 6-seater chairlift on the Himmelsleiter, including snowmaking and a reservoir, as well as investments on the main slope. The building permit for the lift project expires at the end of the year, so time is of the essence. The new ski season also needs to be prepared soon.
