From Monday, Poland wants to carry out random checks on people entering the country at the border with Germany. Minibuses and cars with many occupants will be the main focus of the border guards.

Temporary checks at the border between Poland and Germany will begin today. According to the border police, random checks will be carried out at a total of 52 crossings. The border guards will be keeping a particularly close eye on buses, minibuses and cars with many occupants, as well as vehicles with tinted windows.

The checks should begin at midnight and initially continue until August 5. Travelers who want to cross the border must have an identity card or passport with them. Poland also intends to carry out checks at its border with Lithuania in the coming weeks.

The center-left government in Warsaw has ordered the controls in response to German border controls. Germany has already been carrying out random checks at the border with Poland since October 2023 in order to stop irregular migration.

Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had ordered more intensive border controls shortly after the new federal government took office in May. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers could also be turned back at the border in future. Refoulement from Germany is a particularly contentious issue in Poland.
