From today, the Agra Bridge in Leipzig will only be open to restricted traffic. In order to relieve the dilapidated structure, only vehicles up to 3.5 tons are allowed to drive on it, according to Saxony's Ministry of Infrastructure. Cars will also have to drive more slowly.
The bridge south of Leipzig is to be demolished. According to the ministry, investigations have shown that the structure has significant defects.
For many years, there have been discussions about the condition of the structure, which was built between 1970 and 1976. Because of the so-called Hennigsdorf prestressing steel used, which was also used in the collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden, the Agra Bridge is one of 19 bridges in Saxony that are under particular scrutiny.
