A large group of masked rioters threw stones at the windows of an MP's office, a bank and a bus stop in Leipzig. In addition, two cars were damaged in the Plagwitz district on Friday night, police said. An arson attack on another vehicle was unsuccessful.
The state security service has taken over the investigation because the rioters apparently belonged to the far-left spectrum. According to witnesses, they were carrying banners with political demands regarding the Middle East conflict and people in prison. According to the police, an anonymous confessional letter about a "shearing demo through Leipzig West" had been published on the internet.
The extent of the damage could not yet be quantified. No one has been arrested and the search for the perpetrators is ongoing. An investigation is underway on suspicion of aggravated breach of the peace.
