The Greens believe that action against criminals in the financial sector is inadequate. The state is missing out on billions. A new federal authority based in Dresden could help.

The Greens accuse the Saxon government of a lack of commitment in the fight against financial crime. "Financial crime not only causes the state billions in losses. Both the federal and state budgets have considerable funding gaps in some cases," said Green Party domestic politician Valentin Lippmann. That is why quick-witted and effective structures are needed to combat this form of crime.

Dresden as a location for a new federal office?

This would also benefit the fight against organized crime and the threat posed by right-wing extremism, where the authorities have been struggling to fully uncover the financial flows and sources of funding for many years, argued Lippmann. He had submitted a minor question to the state parliament and wanted to know whether Dresden was a possible location for the federal office to combat financial crime planned by the previous federal government.

In his response, Finance Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU) pointed out that the new federal government had also agreed in the coalition agreement to bundle the federal government's competencies in the area of financial crime. Various models are currently being discussed. However, the Saxon government does not have any detailed information. The decision to establish a federal authority is the responsibility of the federal government. Saxony has campaigned for a Saxon location.

Greens: Government must not sit on its hands

The Greens concluded that the fight against financial crime is currently not on the list of priorities of the federal government and Saxony. It is irresponsible that there is no clear perspective for such a federal office. The important project should not simply fall victim to the change of legislature, said Lippmann and called on Piwarz to make a strong commitment to the establishment of the authority in Dresden. The state government seems to be sitting on its hands. This must change immediately.
