There were 16 citizens' initiatives in the municipalities of Saxony last year. In addition, 6 referendums were initiated by local councils. Four of these resulted in a referendum, according to the latest citizens' petition report by the association "Mehr Demokratie" (More Democracy).
The participation experts positively emphasized that the number of supporters required in Saxony was comparatively low. In 2022, the Saxon state parliament decided to lower the signature threshold for citizens' petitions from 10 percent to 5 percent.
There were 229 direct democracy procedures nationwide last year. In the federal state rankings, Bavaria is at the top with 93 procedures, followed by Baden-Württemberg (31) and North Rhine-Westphalia (30).
