Too little snow - start of the season in Oberwiesenthal postponed

The announced start of the winter season in Oberwiesenthal this weekend has been canceled. The very mild temperatures of over ten degrees Celsius and drizzle have ruined the plans on site, says René Lötzsch from the Fichtelberg Schwebebahn. This means that, in addition to the events planned from Saturday, the official start of skiing operations has also been canceled for the time being. "The remaining snow cover is simply too thin," says Lötzsch.

Only the 130-metre-long Wonder Carpet is still in operation. "We want to separate the area there into two runs for tobogganists and beginners," says Lötzsch, explaining the plans to create at least a small offer for winter fans. LGO Fichtelberghaus GmbH also confirmed that the "Winter-Opening 2025" in Saxony's largest ski area has been canceled. According to the company, the events in front of the open-air stage have also been canceled. The LGO is now hoping for a party atmosphere on New Year's Eve: five DJs and a fire show are to be available from the afternoon - and actually also a night skiing and après-ski offer.

Weather remains mild for the time being

However, the German Weather Service (DWD) has not yet been able to detect any signs of an impending onset of winter weather. "For the time being, the southerly flow will remain with very mild air and intermittent rain", says Stefanie Kaminski from the DWD, also with a view to the coming weekend. However, it is still too early for reliable forecasts for the Christmas holidays and beyond, she said.
