Study: Saxony wants to expand cycle tourism

Bike tourism brings Saxony a turnover of more than half a billion euros every year. "Saxony already has a very good starting point for cycling and bike tourism," said Saxony's Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) at the opening of the "Bike Summit 2025" in Bannewitz near Dresden. The ministry sees room for improvement and wants to further expand cycle tourism.

A new study entitled "Cycle Tourism in the Free State of Saxony" now provides insights into the status quo of cycle tourism in Saxony and makes suggestions for further development. According to the information, the focus is more on better use and marketing of the existing infrastructure - and less on the construction of new cycle paths.

New themed routes for cyclists

According to the study, cycle tourism is of "considerable economic importance" and generates an annual turnover of 568.3 million euros for the Free State of Saxony. There is still considerable potential, it said. Therefore, among other things, the establishment of a central coordination office for cycling and mountain bike tourism and new themed routes in the areas of culture, cuisine and nature are proposed. Existing routes should also be better marketed.

Saxony has numerous cross-border cycle paths - such as the Elbe Cycle Path, the Oder-Neisse Cycle Path and the Stoneman Miriquidi - and wants to focus more on cross-border cooperation in future. As an alternative to ski camps, the Free State wants to score points for cycling tours, especially with a young audience.
