Physicians from Saxony have called for a sugar tax and a ban on advertising for high-sugar products. Studies have shown that this reduces the consumption of unhealthy foods and protects health development, according to the Saxon State Medical Association. This tax and the advertising ban must be introduced by the federal government.
Too much sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and fatty liver disease, it said. Countries such as the UK and Mexico have shown that a sugar tax and an advertising ban work.
