Not much snow has really fallen in Saxony yet. Nevertheless, the first ski resorts have opened their slopes - artificial snow makes it possible.

The first ski resorts in Saxony have started the season. In Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge mountains, the ski lifts opened after snow cannons had ensured good piste conditions over the past few days. Further west in the Eibenstock ski arena, regular skiing operations also started, according to the operators.

The season also opened in Saxony's largest ski resort in Oberwiesenthal - but without skiing operations. According to the Saxon Ministry of Tourism, most ski resorts are planning to open their slopes next week.

The weather forecast for the next few days is not very wintry, however. According to the German Weather Service, a warm front is moving through, bringing mild temperatures with plus degrees even in the mountains. It will also be very stormy in the mountains at the beginning of the week.

There are 67 ski resorts and more than 40 ski lifts in Saxony - most of which are operated by private clubs. With six lifts, Oberwiesenthal is the largest ski resort in the Free State.
