Double joy at Hoyerswerda Zoo: the meerkats and whooper swans have had offspring. The young animals were born at the beginning of May and are now showing off to visitors, as the zoo announced.
The whooper swans are therefore a first. It is the first offspring since the species has existed in Hoyerswerda. According to the announcement, the two fluffy chicks are curiously exploring their surroundings. The zoo advises visitors to keep their distance, as the parents pay close attention to their offspring.
Queen Heidi and her meerkat family have had four offspring - meaning the clan now has 15 members. The sex of the young animals is still unclear. The vet will only find out at the next routine check-up.
"Still a little clumsy, but already lively, the five-week-old meerkats are exploring their enclosure," it continues. In addition to sleeping and eating, their favorite activities at the moment are imitating the big ones and digging for insects.
