Hoyerswerda Zoo is mourning the loss of its leopard San. The big cat had to be put to sleep due to an acute kidney condition, the zoo announced. The entire zoo team is deeply saddened. San had been under treatment for a kidney condition for some time and had been given special medication. Over the past few days, however, his condition has increasingly deteriorated. He had shown no appetite or urge to move.
Pure carnivores prone to kidney problems
After initial medical measures had not brought any improvement, San was put out of his misery, it was said. "As cats are pure carnivores, they are unfortunately extremely susceptible to kidney problems. Therefore, this diagnosis is not an atypical disease for leopards," said zoo veterinarian Holger Metting.
