The award, presented by the Federal President, is one of the most highly endowed environmental prizes. This year, an innovative galvanizing process and research into the climate system are being honoured.

The German Environmental Award will be presented this Sunday in the Capital of Culture Chemnitz. The award, which comes with half a million euros in prize money, goes to a Swiss climate researcher and a company from North Rhine-Westphalia for its resource-saving galvanizing process. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will present them with the award in the Chemnitz City Hall.

The German Environmental Award is presented annually by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) for decisive and exemplary achievements in the protection and preservation of the environment. According to the DBU, it is one of the most highly endowed environmental awards in Europe.

Swiss climate researcher Sonia Isabelle Seneviratne will be honored in Chemnitz for her climate research. According to the DBU, the professor at ETH Zurich and Vice President of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has developed new findings on the climate system - in particular on how soil moisture, plants and the atmosphere influence each other.
