Numerous wasps are now buzzing around coffee tables and ice cream sundaes in Saxony again. "In summer, the colonies reach their peak. The workers are out and about collecting food for the larvae," said insect expert Matthias Nuß from the nature conservation organization Nabu in Saxony. He had no data to suggest that this year was an exceptional wasp year in Saxony. "What we are seeing now is within the normal range."
According to him, the rather rainy weather in recent weeks could even have delayed the development of the insects somewhat. "When the weather is bad, the workers don't fly out as much and development is significantly slowed down." According to him, the animals become particularly troublesome when the queens die and the workers leave the nest. This is the case in September or October.
The expert recommends three things when dealing with the animals:
- One should avoid nests. "As a rule, wasps only sting when you get too close to the nest and behave incorrectly." Children in particular should be kept away from nests, he warns.
- You should never scare wasps away with your hand at the table. On the one hand, they could land uncontrollably on the other person. Secondly, they become aggressive and attract even more wasps. Nuss recommends distraction feeding a little away from the table.
- Allergy sufferers should always have their emergency kit with them at this time of year and make sure that the expiration date has not passed.
