A dead greylag goose found on Lake Markkleeberg near Leipzig has been diagnosed with avian influenza. Analyses by the Saxony State Investigation Institute and the Friedrich Löffler Institute (FLI) confirm an infection with the avian influenza virus H5N1, as announced by the veterinary office of the district of Leipzig on Tuesday.
Poultry farmers in the district of Leipzig are asked to protect their animals from contact with wild birds. The FLI currently rates the risk of introduction of avian influenza viruses as high. As the virus can spread very easily and quickly, people should avoid visiting Lake Markkleeberg if possible or use paths away from the shore, it said. This applies in particular to walks with dogs.
