About two dozen activists from the Extinction Rebellion movement have once again blocked an inner-city intersection in Dresden to protest against the city council's impending rejection of the climate protection concept. Under the slogan "Natural gas is burning our future", they stood on the road near the town hall for several minutes, briefly paralyzing traffic. Most drivers remained relaxed, a few reacted by honking their horns.
Activists: fossil fuel phase-out overdue
"We have been fighting for a new climate protection concept for years. To simply say no now is a capitulation on the part of politicians to lead Dresden into the future. Dresden would simply be burying its head in the sand in the face of the climate crisis," explained activist Louise Hummel-Schröter for the Parents for Future initiative. We simply don't have the time to let the resources we have worked for go to waste. The Dresden City Council plans to vote on the concept on March 26.
The activists are calling for a faster and socially just end to heating with fossil fuels. "Dresden City Council has a duty to plan our heating supply reliably post-fossil. Anyone who hesitates when it comes to climate protection is not acting in a conservative manner, but is recklessly inviting chaos," argued climate activist Christian Bläul. The phase-out of fossil natural gas and the heating transition to renewable energies is long overdue. Any further delay would drive up the costs.
Extinction Rebellion is an international environmental protection organization that uses means of civil disobedience to draw attention to urgent problems such as the climate crisis and species extinction.
