Hoyerswerda Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its favorites - the 42-year-old female golden eagle Tschari. She had been suffering from osteoarthritis for a long time and was severely restricted in her mobility, the zoo announced. After close consultation with the zoo vet and colleagues at the zoo, it was decided on Monday to "let Tschari go" and put her to sleep, explained zoo animal inspector Thomas Arndt. "The entire zoo is deeply saddened by the loss," he said.
Tschari had lived at Hoyerswerda Zoo since 1990 and, as a Mongolian golden eagle, was one of the largest of its kind. In March of this year, Tschari was "Senior of the Month", a social media campaign by the zoo on Facebook and Instagram. In spring, the aviary was made barrier-free for the "senior" and equipped with an auxiliary ladder. The life expectancy of golden eagles is around 30 years.
